Is it me, or is Greg Gross fighting back tears on this one?
He sees the end of the nerd era dawning just over the horizon. Who can blame him for getting a little misty?

I think Nerdzah Ball nailed it on the reason for Gross’s sad-eyed countenance. This was 1989. With the end of the decade just around the corner, Gross must have known that he would be turning in his oversized glasses at the end of the season. The warning signs were all around him – Chris Sabo was already sporting rec specs, which were nearly as nerdy looking, but at least more appropriate for athletes. The winter of 1989-90 was truly a cold one for nerdy baseball players.
