Nerds Infiltrate Topps!

March 3rd, 2009 by Nerdicus Finch

For those of you, like me, who haven’t seen a new baseball card since you bought that $5.00 pack of 1994 Fleer Flair, you might be interested in this post on the Yahoo! baseball blog, in which the author thumbs through a pack of 2009 Topps. I especially liked the Jerome Walton reference.

The cards are pretty hideous, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that WHIP is included as a stat category on the backs of the cards! I don’t know how long this has been going on, but I think it’s pretty obvious that nerds have infiltrated the upper management of Topps. What’s next, Donruss replacing “Rated Rookies” with “VORP Rookie All Stars?”

  1. Greeley says:

Where was the picture on the Chris Lambert rookie card taken? It looks like it was taken at the Lambert family picnic. Was he so excited to get a spring training invite he had to put the uni on to show his Aunts and Uncles and one happened to be a Topps photographer? There are literally no discernable baseball images in the background…unless you count grass…I guess?

  2. I’ll take it one step further…that picture looks like he’s posing by one of the fake backgrounds in front of which the kids at my elementary school get their yearly photos taken. They can choose “brick wall,” “field with trees,” or “laser light show.” Mr. Lambert appears to have chosen “field with trees.”
