There goes my argument that there are no African American nerds besides Urkel.
Currently a coach for my hometown Portland Beavers! We have great seats this year – I’ll holler at him to check out his pic.
His full name is apparently William McKinley Venable. I’ve always liked when people have a former president’s first and last name as their first and middle name. Like George Washington Carver or Grover Cleveland Alexander.
I wouldn’t let this guy coach my softball team, let alone some sort of real minor league baseball. He was absolutely terrible. Sorry Max, it’s true.
Fuck you, Doc
Why do these comment threads always end in obscenities? Can’t we all just get along?
I love the layout of this card where you have the Reds logo from the ’86 Donruss template mirroring the Reds logo on Venable’s sweet mesh (spring training?) jersey.
There’s no card background quite like the seizure-inducing 1986 Donruss background. The packs should come with an epilepsy warning like the old nintendo games used to.
Anyone find slight irony in a group of card collecting computer geeks calling major league ball players ‘nerds’?
No. Why?
Gee, doc, what did you look like in 1986???
Whatever, Doc…
If he was so bad you idiot how is it that he was in the majors for 12 years? Not only that but I know people he coached who were sent up and credit their careers to Max. My guess is you weren’t around in “86 because he was considered hot! Would love to know what you do for a living and what people say about your looks.
If only Max Venable had this many defenders when he was fighting to stay in the big leagues. By the way, I’m beautiful and have an important job.
