IMHO, Orel Hershiser is a transcendent nerd, a nerd’s nerd, if you will. He doesn’t need glasses, a bad haircut, ill-fitting clothes, or an unfortunate photograph to appear nerdy. He was a nerdy prospect, a nerdy ace, a nerdy elder statesman in the dugout, a nerdy coach, and now, even with trendy glasses and a sharp suit, he’s a nerdy analyst. He’s part of a nerd dynasty: his full name is Orel Leonard Hershiser IV, and he has a son named (you guessed it) Orel Leonard Hershiser V. This photograph says it all: even with the glasses, the quasi-mullet, and the always-awful Astros uniform, Mike Scott is easily outnerded.
Is that Kelsey Grammer on the left?

Excellent points, Douglas. I feel the same logic applies to Greg Maddux as well, though perhaps Orel is in a (nerdy) league of his own.
Is Hershiser the best nerd player ever? I know Maddux is a nerd, but not nearly as nerdy as Hershiser.
So could potentially have a grandson named Orel Leonard Hershiser VI? Leonard Part Six?! Anybody? What, no Bill Cosby nerds out there?
