If you check out a player’s baseball-reference.com page, you can usually find something interesting to talk about. Some weird statistical trend, an unexpected performance, a top-ten stats category you didnt know existed…unfortunately, here’s the best I’ve got for Mr. Quinones: In 1989, Mr. Quinones was 3rd in the National League in sacrifice flies (with 8).

While many baseball nerds have the “hat placement” tag bestowed upon them, Mr. Quinones is the first to receive the coveted “helmet placement” tag.

  1. Douglas Randall Sisk says:

Question: which is nerdier: the ’86 Mariners logo, modeled by Manager Rick Cottier, or Mr. Quinones’ ’88 edition? I’m torn.

On the one hand, the ’86 edition looks like the symbol for a third-rate superhero. I assume the nerds who designed it were going for a trident spearhead that doubles as an ‘M’, which was supposed to totally blow our minds since Seattle has a fishing industry.

On the other hand, the generic ‘S’ of ’88 is pretty nerdy for a professional team, since most “State” universities have the exact same logo. (Seattle has since upgraded to an ‘S’ with a compass/baseball combo.)

In the context of our nerds, Mr. Cottier appears to be on the verge of tears. Perhaps he knows that some people make fun of his team’s nerdy logo. Mr. Quinones, however, looks very happy. That may have nothing to do with his ‘S’ helmet.

    Thoughts?

  2. I much prefer the trident logo. I may even prefer it to the current Seattle logo…it at least took some design work (the merits of which I leave open for debate). The ’88 logo, however, is a total Little League job. I feel like the day before the players reported for spring training one Mariners exec. turned to the other and said, “So you got those new uniforms?” and the other guy said, “Me?!?! That was totally your job!!!” and then then ran to the nearest print shop and took whichever jerseys/hats they had in excess.
