About nerdbaseball.com

Nerd Baseball was forged deep in the jungle attics of northern New Jersey, when a lifelong baseball fan stumbled onto some boxes of baseball cards from his youth and uncovered a treasure trove that would change the world…of his immediate friends. Looking at images of baseball’s golden years, he was astounded by the appearance of the players. The enormous glasses, facial hair, and hair combined in a perfect storm that produced a Frankenstein-like amalgam of world class athlete and 8th grade Mathlete.

As the card collection grew, the climate in the game of baseball also began to undergo a paradigm shift. With the boom of fantasy baseball and the success of the book Moneyball, statistics had suddenly become paramount. And as anyone who has ever owned a TI-82 knows, where there are statistics, there are nerds. Lots of nerds. Since the invention of the contact lens, nerds have had no place in our nation’s pastime. Baseball loving nerds across America were relegated to their mothers’ basements, but the time had come for them to step back into the spotlight, provided they had sufficient sunblock.

The modern game is an uneasy truce between the old school, good old boys from oldstown, and the number crunching, pocket protector wearing dweebs who now boss them around. Whether you believe in the scientific objectivity of statitics or favor the ability of a scout to divine a player’s “grittyness,” everyone can agree that this argument has gotten out of control. We here at Nerdbaseball.com prefer to remember a simpler time, when a professional baseball player could wear a pair of glasses without being subjected to laughter, ridicule, or atomic wedgies.

Our primary goal is to showcase these forgotten trailblazers by letting the world see that nerds and baseball can coexist in harmony. Also, the pictures are really funny. In addition, we will be providing our unsolicited nerdy opinions on the game and the media covering it. So enjoy the site and look for it to grow and evolve through time. Thank you, and good nerd.
