Sadly, Mr. Porter was one of the first professional baseball players to publicly admit having substance abuse problems. From Wikipedia:

During spring training in 1980, former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Don Newcombe paid a visit to the Kansas City clubhouse. He asked the players 10 questions, the point of which being if a player answered three or more of the questions with an affirmation, the player might have a problem with drugs or alcohol. Porter affirmed all 10 questions and checked himself into a rehabilitation center, admitting he had abused alcohol, cocaine, Quaaludes, and marijuana.

He died in August of 2002 of “toxic effects of cocaine.”

I choose to remember Mr. Porter as “one of the few major league catchers of his time to wear eyeglasses behind the plate” and being “the only batter ever to bat with one hand on the bat.”

If you’re new to the site, click here to see our previous post about Mr. Hume.

Mr. Hume had 4-5 great seasons as a relief pitcher for the Reds and Phillies.  Along with Rollie Fingers, he was the 1980 co-winner of the Sporting News “Fireman of the Year” award.

Mr. Ladd had a short career as a relief pitcher with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers. He had one memorable season – 1983, when he posted a 2.55 ERA (148 ERA+), 0.932 WHIP, and 25 saves in 44 appearances, taking over the closer role for the injured Rollie Fingers.

I like how the Mariners logo on the card is positioned directly over where the logo is on Mr. Ladd’s jersey.

From the back of card: “Daryl is a fan of popular music. He owns an excellent impersonation of singer Stevie Wonder.”

How about that Sox uni? Yikes.

Mr. Gantner played baseball at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and had his uniform number retired there. In the majors, he once went 1,762 consecutive at-bats without hitting a home run.

From Wikipedia: “Espinoza joins Ruppert Jones, Ricky Lee Nelson, Dave Kingman, José Canseco, and Kevin Millar as the only players in MLB history to hit a fair ball that got stuck in a stadium obstruction.” Pretty exclusive company.

Mr. Davis broke a New York Yankees record by striking out eight consecutive batters in a single relief appearance. He also co-owns the record for most blown saves in a single season, with 14. He actually had 5 seasons throughout his career (’79, ’80, ’81, ’83, ’85) that I wouuld categorize between “good” and “great.” In two of these he actually averaged over 10 K’s per 9 innings. For a nerd, this is the eqivalent of hall-of-fame level production.
