New Hall of Fame Criteria: Be a Culture-Changer

Friday, May 8th, 2009 by Nerdicus Finch

The general know-nothingness of ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd has been well-documented elsewhere. Fire Joe Morgan destroyed Cowherd in legendary fashion back in 2006, so I’m not going to spend much time ripping the guy in general terms since it’s been done so thoroughly in the past and in a much funnier way than I could ever manage.

I did want to note something that I heard Cowherd say this afternoon, however. While running some errands during lunch today, I had the misfortune of catching a few minutes of Cowherd’s radio show (by the way, ESPN Radio really screwed the pooch when they sent Max Kellerman packing; he used to have a show for the New York market during Cowherd’s time slot and he was surprisingly funny, interesting, and well-informed).

Anyway, Cowherd was discussing how important Curt Schilling and Manny were to the 2004 Red Sox because they “changed the culture” of the team. Their attitudes, Cowherd argued, made the Red Sox no longer fear the Yankees and gave them the confidence to beat them and become champions. He then said (and I’m paraphrasing): “To me, that’s what makes Schilling a Hall of Famer, even more than his 11-2 postseason record. He changed the culture of the Red Sox.”

So let me get this straight. Here is Cowherd’s list of Schilling’s Hall of Fame credentials, in order of importance:

  1. Changed culture of 2004 Red Sox.
  2. 11-2 postseason record.
  3. Everything else he ever did (127 career ERA+, 3116 Ks, 216 wins, 1.137 career WHIP, etc.)

That makes sense, right?

Oh FJM, where do we turn to now?

We here at Nerd Baseball were huge “Fire Joe Morgan” fans….seriously bummed when those guys called it quits. And we’re not even through the first game of the 2009 season when we were given this treat by their favorite MLB commentator:

Opening Night, Braves @ Phillies, bottom of the 6th inning, PH Greg Dobbs batting.

Joe Morgan says “We’re always talking about Chase Utley. We talk about Jimmy Rollins and Ryan Howard. This guy is probably as important a piece to this puzzle as any of those hitters. You know, Charlie [Manuel] manages people. He doesn’t really manage X’s and O’s. That’s why I think he’s so successful.”

I rewound that on Tivo to make sure I heard it correctly.

FJM, we miss you.

This Just In: Rick Reilly Officially Off Deep End

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 by Nerdicus Finch

Rick Reilly of ESPN has hit a new low, which is actually saying something when you consider how he embarrassed himself on national television during Josh Hamilton’s home run barrage in last year’s Home Run Derby (remember: “This is a bad day to be an atheist!”). In his latest “Life of Reilly” column for ESPN (the) Magazine, Reilly jumps on the moralizing bandwagon to redistribute the MVP awards that were handed out to suspected or admitted steroid users over the years. I apologize for giving Reilly’s column the full FJM treatment, but it’s a particularly bad piece of baseball writing. Reilly’s column text is in bold.
