The name rang a bell and, searching through my stack of “funny” cards, I found one that I had made featuring Mr. Lake. I’m sure you can guess what it looks like. I hope Mr. Lake brought his hipwaders to the ballpark that day.

Tim Raines should be in the Hall of Fame and, hopefully, he will be in the not-too-distant future. But making a case for Raines’s enshrinement is not the purpose of this post. Rather, this is the third entry in Nerd Baseball’s “funny” card series and it features Raines’s 1990 Topps card. Isn’t it strange how some baseball card companies used the player’s nickname, while others didn’t? I guess it was an editorial decision. Thankfully, Topps decided to use Raines’s nickname on its 1990 card, otherwise my ten-year-old self would not have been able to come up with yet another incredibly literal “funny” card.

A few notes on this “funny” card:

I’m surprised by how much the rocks actually look like rocks. Based on some of my other efforts, I’m going to have to assume that I had my sister make the rocks.

I obviously preferred Scotch tape to glue stick, although the glue stick might have been the better choice for presentation purposes.

I found this “funny” card in a box of old baseball cards at my parents’ summer home this past weekend. There were several others in the box as well, none of which are funny, and all of which I plan to feature on Nerd Baseball.

A few weeks ago, we kicked off Nerd Baseball’s periodic “Funny” Cards feature with my incredibly literal take on Steve Trout. Now we have another attempt at humor by my 11-year-old self.

There are so many disturbing things about this particular “funny” card. Here they are, in no particular order (feel free to add your own in the comments):

The fact that there are two Kenny Rogers, one who pitches and one who sings is probably the most obvious joke I could have made. It’s hard to overstate just how unfunny this is.

For some reason, I drew a bass guitar. I don’t think Kenny Rogers was a bass guitarist. I don’t think he was an anything guitarist.

I bothered to draw tuning pegs on the headstock of the guitar, but didn’t bother to have the guitar strings attach to the tuning pegs.

I didn’t bother to look for a non-action shot card of Rogers to use, which could have produced a much more realistic guitar playing impression. Instead, I used this card, so it looks like he’s throwing the guitar, rather than playing it.

Kenny Rogers was playing major league baseball in 1991. Didn’t he play last year?

Anyone who grew up collecting baseball cards in the late 1980s and early 1990s is intimately familiar with Beckett Baseball Card Monthly. I was a subscriber for several years and eagerly awaited the arrival of each issue, so that I could check out which player was featured on the front and back covers, as well as the soaring value of my stack of 1989 Upper Deck Jerome Walton rookie cards. My other favorite thing about Beckett was the “Funny Cards” section, in which readers would send in baseball cards that they had altered for humorous effect.

Inspired by the creativity of other Beckett readers, I produced my own “funny” cards, which my ten-year-old sense of humor thought were pretty damned clever. They weren’t. In fact, looking at my efforts nearly two decades later is pretty embarrassing. Nevertheless, I will periodically feature some of my “funny” cards on Nerd Baseball. The first masterwork, Steve Trout, is displayed below. I apologize in advance for the douche chills.
